Some 9mm Luger ammunition is especially accurate and is marketed as "match" ammo. To see how accurate it really is, I gathered several brands of match 9mm Luger ammunition to see how they performed.
The ones used in this article represent just a sampling of what's available. For comparison, I also tested ammunition not labeled as match ammo.
Some of it is general-purpose ammunition, while some has a reputation for good accuracy. Here's what I discovered.
There's no denying the 9mm luger is one of the most popular cartridges on the planet. It has sufficient power for a wide range of uses; is one of the least expensive centerfire rounds on gun store shelves; and is chambered in an amazing array of semiautomatic pistols, rifles, and, even, revolvers.
Most handguns chambered for the 9mm Luger are considered combat or defensive guns, and they offer "combat accuracy. That's more than enough for their intended use, but you won't win any Bullseye matches with that performance. This is not to say that the 9mm Luger isn't capable of precision accuracy. A well-tuned pistol can produce very small isboxer wiki, in the range of 10 shots in 1 inch at 50 yards.
The Army Marksmanship Unit uses accurized 9mm M9 pistols alongside the. Brad fired these 9mm match and non-match loads with his Model mounted in a Ransom Rest. In some instances the results were as expected, but in others they were surprising. Fine accuracy requires two things: a capable firearm and capable ammunition.
Even the most accurate gun won't perform well with poor ammunition, and nearly every gun will show improved performance with accurate ammunition. Some manufacturers guarantee their ammunition will produce groups of a specific size at a specific distance when fired from a barrel fixture. That barrel fixture is an important detail. The gun's barrel is removed from the gun and placed in the barrel fixture because when it is in the gun, there are always tolerances in how the barrel, slide, and frame are fitted that can result in the barrel not being pointed at the exact same spot every time the gun is fired.
A barrel fixture eliminates these inconsistencies, so it is the ultimate arbiter of the performance of the ammunition and barrel. I don't have a barrel fixture, but I have the next best thing: a Ransom Rest. It holds the gun in the same position for every shot. My test pistol was a Para high-capacity frame with a Caspian slide and a 5. It does not qualify as a well-tuned, match-grade gun, but it shoots well with ammunition it likes.
I selected the following 9mm ammunition to test. For all but one loading I fired three shot groups at 25 yards with the pistol mounted in the Ransom Rest and averaged those figures. Two 338 swertres result gidapp groups were fired and averaged for that other load. The results are listed in the accompanying chart. Are you looking for the best, most quality-controlled, remanufactured standard target 9mm bulk ammunition rounds available anywhere in the lower 48?

Read your loading manual, select an appropriate powder that you can get and work up a load until you get the same MV, using the same bullet as the factory load.
Without the MV of the factory load, you can still take a typical powder like HP38, use the same bullet, and work up a load that functions the gun reliably. Helps if you start in the center of the loading data to reduce search. Boolean Search is the technical term Load 5 from center of data, and shoot. Load will be either too light or too hot. If too light most likelythen load 5 halfway between first load and max load, and shoot that.
Repeat by going either up or down, as indicated by test firing. DO NOT exceed max load. Nevada Ed. XTP in a 4" G19, clocks around and might hit to in a 6" The xtp is one of the slowest SD loads in the gr loadings but gets good penetration and lower recoil than the other brands.
Most Factory target 9mm ammo is around fps, like the Federal Eagles. Good shooting. I'd never heard of the ammo, so I went to their website and tool a look at it.
As for my thoughts Because of its' velocity or its' accuracy? It's loaded to around fps. But they also claim it's loaded to shoot consistently at 1.
If it's accuracy you want then you might have to work a little harder to get where you want. Find the most accurate bullet you can, buy several powders that fall in the ideal tolerance range for the bullet weight and caliber, buy several brands of primers and remember that accuracy starts with how you prep your brass and ends with how you pull the trigger, and then start loading.
I like Power Pistol.Taking a long-range class with cheap practice ammo seems like a waste of the class to me. Match ammo seems to be mainly centered around either grain or grain bullets with only a couple of manufacturers making grain. ASYM has a blog post here explaining why this is. I started a thread on Addicts.
I then got to thinking about my previous accuracy tests and how well duty ammo has performed. All known for making some of the best defensive rounds available. Using a high quality match bullet, this is designed for extreme accuracy.

Accuracy test requirement: 5 ten-shot groups at 50 yards, with an average group size not to exceed 1. Match grade ammunition at its finest.
To ensure our reputation for quality and consistency, powder charges are meticulously weighed and finished rounds are visually inspected and polished.
Each piece of brass is checked for correct length, neck-sized, chamfered, trued and flash holes are checked for proper alignment. The Signature Jacketed Match 9mm load has been extensively tested in style and other high-performance firearms and is the most accurate grain 9mm ammunition available.
It has proven itself as a consistent, dependable performer at a reasonable price. The result is a cartridge that provides officers the ultimate defense in lethal force confrontations. Nevertheless they are a main manufacturer and there are people who do like their ammo.
Bullets are custom designed for individual loads. The most effective, consistent, and reliable concealed carry ammunition available today! Known mostly for making very hot rounds Underwood is a smaller manufacturer but with a dedicated following. This ammunition is new production, non-corrosive, in boxer primed, reloadable brass cases.
My best shooting to date was while shooting 10 shot groups at 25 yards. My friend and firearms trainer, Shawn with Firearms Legal Protectiongot the invitation.
We will each shoot 5 five-shot groups with each ammo. The targets will be placed at a measured 25 yards and shooting done from a Caldwell rest. The targets themselves are a 2 inch square printed on an 8. Also, each shooter will not know what ammo they are shooting at that time. This will be accomplished by splitting up the ammo beforehand and the non-shooter loading the mags of the shooter.2020 7 30 P 10S IMI and AA ammo at 100 yards 0
Given the human element I was wondering how each of us were going to stack up with the same ammo. After breaking down all the data from 80 targets consisting of rounds I found that our groups with the same ammo averaged within a half-inch of each other. I never would have predicted that. Neither myself or Shawn have seen a 9mm ammo produce such a fireball, this stuff is a serious fire-breather!
Drum roll please. Coming in at number 6 is Underwood with a group size of 1. Number 7 goes to Hornady with its best group measuring 1. Firmly and deeply planted in last place at number 8 is Wilson Combat with a disqualification.
As the second most expensive of the match ammo I had high hopes for its performance. It bombed. Three of the ten groups only had 4 shots on target and one group only had 3. Since neither of us knew what ammo we were shooting at what time and we both had rounds missing from our targets I put this sorely disappointing result squarely on Wilson Combat.
Since there was no way to compensate for how badly it skewed the data it was completely disqualified. Underwood, Wilson and Hornady make up 3 of the 4 most expensive ammo tested and were 3 of the 4 worst performers. No problems with smooth function, consistent and very good accuracy; absolutely shoots to POA. Great 9mm, it runs flawlessly through every pistol and carbine, no matter the make. My department does a marksmanship award using parts of the PPC course with your duty gun shooting at 50 yards.
Before me everyone that passed it passed it with highly modified revolvers and s. I was the first to pass it with a polymer handgun. I purchased a case of this ammo Thinking it would take me multiple tries and I completed it on the first try using less than rounds to zero and complete the course. I gave him a single box of this elite match and he shot a immediately. He admitted the only difference was the ammo and then tried to buy the rest from me.
My Kimber Target ll produced its best groups with this ammo. Offering free shipping with case orders would take some of the pain out of the cost, and I would give it 5 stars. I have ordered a case of the HP and a case of grain HP and the looks like it is just a little more accurate than the grain out of my sig legion with romeo red dot at yards. With the grain HP 9 out of 10 shots are within 5 inches of the target center. At 3, 7 and 15 yards, shots tear a hole in the target.
At 25 with the Q5, all shots are within a 2 inch circle shooting freehand at a face pace. This ammo is by far the best on the market in accurate shooting and competitions. Glad I purchased from Atlanta Arms.

That got me to wondering: What's out there in the way of match grade ammo in 9mm? Anybody got anything they've used that worked particularly well for them? I know it's going to be pistol-specific. I'm looking for leads.
It's too late to work within the system, but too early to shoot the bastards. I'm interested, too. Since most 9mm pistols aren't "target" or "match grade" although some service pistols like SIGs are capable of itthere isn't a lot of "match grade" ammo around.
I found this from Nosler that is advertised as such. The jacket of a FMJ is rolled over the edge and leaves the base exposed.
A JHP jacket is formed over the base first. A smoother, more consistent base is less likely to be blown slightly off-course as it exits the muzzle. You see the same thing in match rifle bullets.
Massad Ayoob tests fires many guns with Federal 9BP "old school" JHP, gr, standard pressure and has remarked that it is consistently accurate. Perhaps a grain JHP might be more accurate.
GECO hexagon is supposed to be very good in the P Interesting, FD. Thanks for the pointer. The JHP tends to stabilize better, is loaded more accurately than FMJ so it achieves closer velocity from round to round. I'd try possibly Gold Dots or similar. Use a proven target load.
